The Burden of Infectious Diseases Summer School will take place from 27 to 29 August 2025, in Ghent, Belgium, and is designed to provide participants with practical skills for calculating Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) specifically in the context of infectious diseases. Through a combination of lectures and hands-on sessions, the summer school will guide participants through the concepts of Years of Life Lost (YLL) and Years Lived with Disability (YLD), data requirements, disease modeling, and knowledge translation. Participants will apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios by working on a project focused on a specific infectious disease, addressing data collection, DALY calculation, and stakeholder communication. Exercises and project work will be supervised by experienced burden of disease researchers.

Who should attend
This summer school is aimed at professionals, researchers, and students in public health and related fields. A basic understanding of epidemiology is required, and participants should be comfortable working with MS Excel. All teaching will be conducted in English.
