FAIR Data and Databases
PARC organised an in-person training course on FAIR Data and Databases, which took place in Ljubljana, Slovenia, from 22 to 24 May 2024. The course was hosted under the scientific coordination of the Jožef Stefan Institute, in collaboration with PARC. The program addressed the critical need for FAIRification of data to enhance exchange and re-use of information across scientific disciplines and to strengthen capacities for chemical risk assessment. Participants were introduced to FAIR principles, practices, and terminology, and trained in efficient and reliable data management approaches.
Training content
• Introduction to FAIR data principles, terminology, and tools
• Efficient data management - the training provided insight into the use of Python and SQL (Structured Query Language) in the context of relational databases.
• Training on the use of FAIR Implementation Profiles (FIPs) to evaluate the FAIRness of existing databases
• Hands-on sessions on the extraction of geospatial data from European databases for PARC-related activities
Target audience
The course was designed for researchers and students producing experimental data related to chemical exposure, hazard and risk assessment, as well as those extracting and using data stored in existing databases for chemical risk assessment. Expertise in computer or data sciences was considered an asset.
Practical details
The three-day course was open to both PARC members and non-members, with priority given to PARC partners outside WP7. Selection was based on applicants’ motivation, expertise, and geographical representation. There were no registration fees.
