We focus on chemical groups prioritized based on the analysis of relevant exposure mixtures and their presence in environmental samples with identified knowledge gaps. These include phthalates, bisphenols, PFAS, pharmaceuticals and CUPs, as well as their relevant bioactive metabolites and transformation products present in the environment and human exposure mixtures. A key area of our research is the characterization of the endocrine disrupting effects of complex pollutant mixtures from the environment — such as waste and surface waters — which contain many of the above listed compound groups, namely PPCPs and CUPs. In this context, mixture effects assessment and novel approaches towards the identification and prioritization of risk drivers constitute a central focus of our work.

Next to developing novel bioassays, we assess the endocrine disrupting effects of relevant compounds or their reconstructed mixtures, drawing on data from human cohort and environmental studies focused on exposure mixtures. Our work covers representative compounds from different prioritized groups — including PFAS, bisphenols, phthalates, POPs, PAHs, PCBs, benzophenones, and flame retardants — tested across various bioassays. We focus particularly on the characterization of complex pollutant mixtures from indoor and outdoor human exposure sources (e.g. air, dust), as well as reconstituted mixtures derived from human cohort study results.
