Science Digest recap 2024

In the fast-moving world of scientific research, staying up to date about recent findings on chemicals and their impact on health and the environment is vital. This is where the PARC Science Digest newsletter comes into play, providing news about relevant chemical research in a user-friendly way. In 2024, the Science Digest was published in eight editions, showcasing in total 32 scientific publications, discussing some of today’s most relevant issues in the chemical world.

A sneak-peak into the research in 2024

The 2024 Science Digests featured research on a wide range of topics. Here is a snapshot of just some of the topics explored:

  1. How do chemicals impact brain function?
Studies have examined the effects of phthalate metabolites on children's behaviour and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), offering valuable insights into the connection between chemical exposure and neurodevelopment.
  2. Are alternatives to harmful substances safer?
Bisphenol A (BPA) alternatives, widely used in consumer goods, were evaluated for environmental levels and toxicity. The findings emphasise the need for cautious regulatory consideration when adopting replacements.

  3. What happens when we are exposed to chemicals early in life?
Research on PFOA and PFOS exposure in children (HELIX study) explored early-life exposure pathways through prenatal development, breastfeeding, and diet.

  4. How can innovative methodologies improve chemical risk assessment?
One scientific publication highlighted the increasing chemical burden on the environment and human populations. The research shows necessity for regulatory risk assessments to evolve, outlining key recommendations for leveraging innovative analytical methods to advance regulatory practices in order to manage, reduce, and prevent adverse impacts on human and environmental health associated with hazardous chemicals.

Other studies dived into environmental toxins affecting zebrafish larvae, risk assessment inconsistencies in EU policies, and the effects of chemical mixtures in real-life scenarios.

Why you should read the Science Digest

For each publication, the Science Digest includes key messages for policymakers, stakeholders, and anyone interested, transforming complex science into practical insights, supporting informed decisions and safer communities.

Future editions will even feature key messages for civil society to help individuals take practical steps to protect their health. Stay tuned!
