Bridging innovation and legislation: the EU’s Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) framework
The European Commission’s Safe and Sustainable by Design (EC SSbD) Framework offers a voluntary, pre-market approach to embed safety and sustainability considerations throughout the full life cycle of chemicals, materials, processes, and products. By assessing safety and sustainability throughout the life cycle, the framework enables early identification of risks and environmental impacts, helping innovators make informed decisions from the earliest stages of design. It also allows for the redesign of existing products to improve safety and sustainability.
While voluntary, the SSbD approach supports industries in proactively preparing for legal obligations and facilitates compliance with existing EU legislation, e.g. with regards to chemical and product safety obligations. By connecting innovation with legal frameworks, SSbD encourages a proactive, holistic approach to chemical and material development, rather than reacting to issues post-market.
Importantly, the framework aligns with European policy priorities, including the European Green Deal and Clean Industrial Deal, supporting the transition toward safer, more sustainable, and resource-efficient products. By fostering synergies between innovation and legislation, SSbD helps companies navigate regulatory requirements while contributing to long-term environmental and societal goals.
The EC SSbD Framework is thus not only a tool for safer and greener innovation but also a bridge linking early-stage design with regulatory acceptance and market readiness.
