Science to policy: EU chemicals legislation, international conventions and regulatory science
PARC is organising a remote training course entitled “Science to policy: EU chemicals legislation, international conventions and regulatory science”, which take place on 26 November 2026. The training will provide participants with an overview of European and international chemicals legislation, focusing on how scientific evidence contributes to regulatory decision-making and the protection of human health and the environment.
The course is scientifically coordinated by Dr Aglaia Koutsodimou and Aikaterini Meliou, from the General Chemical State Laboratory ↗ (GCSL), Greece.
What to expect:
An overview of EU chemicals legislation, including REACH and CLP, and the evolution of European chemicals policy.
An introduction to international chemicals conventions and frameworks, including the Minamata Convention on Mercury, and the Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions, as well as the “One Substance, One Assessment” initiative.
Insights into the roles of scientific and regulatory bodies, including ECHA, RAC, SEAC, MSC, EFSA, SCCS, and the OECD, in chemical risk assessment and risk management.
Exploration of how experimental data contribute to hazard identification, exposure assessment, and chemical risk assessment.
An understanding of how scientific evidence informs EU chemicals legislation, including regulatory decision-making processes and implementation.
Who should attend:
The course is intended for researchers working in the fields of chemicals, human health or environmental risk assessment who are interested in understanding how their research can contribute to regulatory processes and policy development. It is particularly suitable for PhD candidates and postgraduate students seeking structured understanding of EU and international chemicals legislation. Participants should also have a basic academic background in chemistry, toxicology, environmental sciences, life sciences or a related discipline.
