WP7 meeting

Advancing FAIR data for chemical risk assessment: Highlights from the PARC WP7 Annual Meeting

The Annual Meeting of Work Package 7 (WP7) of the European Partnership for the Assessment of Risks from Chemicals (PARC) took place between 11–13 June in Tartu, Estonia. This WP plays a key role in making chemical risk assessment data findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable, commonly known as FAIR.

Hosted by Tartu University and co-led by Iseult Lynch (University of Birmingham, UK) and Stijn Baken (VITO, Belgium), the meeting brought together data experts and project partners to review progress, share best practices, and plan future steps toward a FAIR data ecosystem in chemical risk assessment.

A central highlight was the presentation of the Chemical Risk Assessment Hub. Still in its beta phase, the Hub aims to integrate diverse data streams and provide a central access point for information on chemical risk assessment. WP7 partners are now testing the tool and gathering feedback, with a broader consultation among PARC partners expected soon. Participants emphasized the importance of linking the Hub with the Common Data Platform on Chemicals, enhancing its usefulness and sustainability.

The meeting also showcased a range of services developed by WP7 to help PARC partners “FAIRify” their data:

  • indexing of FAIR enabling resources to support PARC projects in data management planning,
  • development of metadata schemas and controlled vocabularies to structure information and make it machine-readable, and
  • use of AI tools to extract and organise information from scientific literature.

To increase awareness and use of these resources both within PARC and in the broader chemical risk assessment community, WP7 will soon promote them through various channels.

Finally, the group reaffirmed that full implementation of the FAIR principles - and ensuring interoperability with external platforms - will be essential for preserving and sustaining the valuable data, tools, and knowledge generated by PARC. WP7 will take initiative to contribute this vision to the PARC-level strategy on sustainability.
