Significant progress towards a healthier environment was showcased at the annual meeting of PARC Work Package 4 “Monitoring and Exposure”, held in Berlin on 8-9 October 2024. The meeting brought together partners from across Europe, providing a vital opportunity to strengthen the PARC network, share progress and results, and set goals for future developments.  

The meeting focused on the ongoing work of three key tasks: “Human-biomonitoring”, “Environmental and Multisource Monitoring”, and “Innovative tools and methods”. These tasks contribute to the long-term objective of generating new data on chemicals in environmental and human matrices to better understand exposure pathways. These data are crucial for regulatory purposes and advancing monitoring tools that support the work of government bodies and policymakers.

Key takeaways from the meeting included a reaffirmation of the forward momentum in PARC’s Aligned Studies, along with collaborative discussions aimed at tackling remaining challenges. Participants acknowledged the need for intensified efforts to ensure the sustainability of human biomonitoring across Europe and establish a robust regulatory framework. Furthermore, the meeting emphasized that coordinated environmental and human biomonitoring campaigns will continue to expand and enhance our understanding of harmful substances, their impact on human health and the environment, and the exposure pathways that must be addressed.  Innovative tools and methods for sampling and chemical analysis, developed within the partnership, are posed to drive forward exposure assessment and identify potentially hazardous chemicals for future environmental monitoring and human biomonitoring.
